History of the Serie A & Its Logo

With the Serie A logo getting a slight update ahead of the 2021/22 season we take a look back at the logo in its different variations and the football being played during the time in Italy.
1961 - 1992
The first logo used in Serie A history was the old blue and gold Italian Football Federation logo with the Italian colours running diagonally across it. It was first used in the 1961/62 season where AC Milan won the title with José Altafini firing in 22 goals for the season.
Juventus dominated this period of Serie A picking up 10 Scudettos, 5 in the 70s alone, with arguably the greatest manager in Serie A history at the helm in Giovanni Trapattoni. The other big dogs of the league chipped in with Inter winning 6 and AC Milan winning 5 titles between the 60s and 90s. Napoli also picked up their first and only league title in 86/87 with Diego Maradona famously bringing the Scudetto to the streets of Naples.
1992 - 1996
After 30 years the Italian Football federation logo received an update, showing off three stars for their 3 world cup wins up to that time, Serie A were still using the Italian logo up to this point. The Early 90s were completely owned by AC Milan, winning 4 of the 6 titles up for grabs in this period. This AC Milan side is considered one of the best the Serie-A has ever seen, They had Paulo Maldini in defence, Ruud Gullit and Carlo Ancelotti in midfield and Dutch legend Van Basten up top.
1996 - 2000
In 1996 the Serie A logo received its biggest update getting its first individual Serie A logo, it now featured a football surrounded by colours of the Italian flag and ‘Lega Calcio’ (Football League) written above. Juventus got back on top in Serie A in the late 90s, winning back to back titles in 96/97 and 97/98. The Juventus side was stacked with talent with Alessandro Del Piero netted 47 goals across the title winning seasons and Deschamps and Edgar Davids in midfield.
The surprise packet of the 90s was Lazio, clinching their second ever title in 1999/00 and winning the Copa Del Rey in the same season to make it a historic double. Lazio had managerial duo Roberto Mancini and Diego Siemone in midfield, Nesta the rock at the back and Inzaghi scoring 19 for the season, it went right down to the wire with Lazio going undefeated in 8 games at the end of the season to finish 1 point above Juventus.
2000 - 2006
For the early 2000s the logo got a slight modern update, giving the logo a bit of a smoother look. Roma kicked off the early 2000s where rivals Lazio left it, winning the title for the second time in their history. Batistuta, Totti doing the business up top, Walter Samuel and Cafu at the back and Nakata and Zanetti running the show in midfield, all in the skin tight Kappa kits too, it was a good time to be in Rome.
It was back to regular scheduled programming for the remainder of the early 2000s in Italian football, with Juventus picking up another 3 titles and AC Milan grabbing the leftover one. Juventus had Del Piero on fire in this period along with Trezeguet they were impossible to stop. Aussie striker Christian Veiri (kinda) was also tearing up Serie A in this period for Inter Milan, winning the Italian golden boot in 02/03.
2006 - 2009
2006-09 saw Serie A use different variations of the same logo, opting for an ugly blue and white design with the TIM sponsor right in the middle, although there was nothing ugly about the football being played. Inter Milan won absolutely everything, Jose Mourinho in charge and the likes of Ibrahimovic, Crespo, Veira and Figo at his disposal it was no surprise, they went on to win 5 Scudettos in a row during this period adding the champions league to that in 2010.
2010 - 2018
In 2010 the red, green and white was back in the Serie-A logo, with a bit of gold tying it back to the traditional logo from the 60s. By this time Jose was done in the Serie A and seemingly so were Inter, their cross town rivals picked up the slack though winning their first title in 7 years with Zlatan switching sides and slotting in alongside Pato and Robinho.
After Milan though it was all Juventus who decided they never wanted another italian to win anything, picking up a ridiculous 9 titles in a row. Matri, Pirlo, Chiellini, Vidal, Bonucci, Dybala, Mandzukic, Pogba, Marchisio, Buffon the list of talent goes on.
2018 - 2019
For the 2018/19 season the Serie A logo received another refresh, just for the one season, giving it a much cleaner look. 2018/19 was again dominated by Juventus, the side couldn’t get much better but the addition of 4 time Ballon d’Or and ex Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo didn't hurt. It was another walk in the park for this Juve side, winning the league by 11 points. Ronaldo finished top scorer with Dybala and Mandzukic chipping in, scoring 35 goals between them.
2019 - Today
In 2019 Serie A changed the logo again, strengthening the ‘centrality’ of the A, supposedly representing a diamond to symbolise how special the league is. Serie A started to get a little more interesting with Inter Milan finally waking up from their post Mourinho slumber and taking champions Juventus all the way. Juventus rose to the challenge though winning the Scudetto by 1 point, Cristiano Ronaldo firing in 31 goals in the league.
in the 20/21 season we got our first new Italian champion in 9 years. Inter Milan broke a 10 year scudetto drought, stacked with ex premier league talent such as Romelu Lukaku, Ashley Young, Christian Eriksen and Alexis Sanchez, Internazionale smashed the league, winning by 12 points and finishing 13 points clear of previous champions Juventus.
