10 Most Iconic Nike Mercurial Boots of All Time
25 years of speed. The magic of the Mercurial has now touched several generations, from being on the feet of the Brazilian Ronaldo to the Portuguese one. Each one of us have our own fond memories of Nikes most loved speed boot.
To celebrate the anniversary, we have handpicked 10 iconic iterations over the past two and a half decades. Arguably the most popular boot model in the modern game, we focused our selections around innovation and design.
1998 - Mercurial
Starting off our list, is the OG pair of (coloured) Mercurials that featured in the 1998 World Cup. Designed and inspired by the legend himself, Ronaldo Fenomeno. This first ever Mercurial iteration revolutionized the football boot industry by pushing the boundaries of ‘lightweight’ as well as the overall shape of a football boot to become more dynamic and sprint spike-like.
Making this an even bigger classic is the k-leather upper, which shortly transitioned over into the Nike Tiempo line, giving Mercurial the space to explore synthetic and engineered textile materials in the following two decades.
2000 - Match Mercurial
Another step forward for Nike came in 2000 when the newly released Match Mercurial’s weighed in at just 230 grams, which was the lightest on the market at the time. The new design featured its first synthetic upper rather than leather. Once again made famous on the feet of R9.
Look familiar? Recently at the world cup, the Nike Generation Pack took inspiration from the gold pair of Match Mercurial’s Ronaldo wore over twenty years ago.
2006 - Mercurial Vapor III
Fast forward six years and three iterations later, was another popular design released prior to the 2006 World Cup. Along with the minimalistic look, also came the revolutionary Teijin synthetic upper which allowed the boot to be water-resistant and remain light in all conditions.
This technology was to remain on the Mercurial line for several years to come. Besides the tech, many of us still grin when thinking back to the Joga Bonito campaigns featuring a young Cristiano Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic competing against each other with flicks and tricks with Eric Cantona as the judge.
2008 - Mercurial Vapor IV
In February 2008, Nike celebrated 10 years of Mercurials with the release of its most innovative football boot at the time - The Mercurial Vapor IV. Nike had called upon Premier League forwards such as Didier Drogba, Cristiano Ronaldo and Theo Walcott for direct input into the design process. As a result, Nike was able to develop a series of technological innovations that maximize speed on and off the ball.
One thing is for sure on these boots, they look FAST. Bright orange and citron made some of the boldest ever colourways to be seen on pitch, and this only brought in more attention.
2008 - Mercurial Vapor SL Carbon
A rainy Champions League Final night in Moscow saw Cristiano Ronaldo debut the limited edition Mercurial designed by Nike in 2008.
The key feature as the name suggests, was the carbon fiber. Designed to be even lighter and more responsive than the standard Vapor model. The carbon fiber innovation proved to allow a higher energy return between the foot and the ground which enhanced a players top speed, making it one of the most wanted boots for both collectors and professionals at the time. Not to mention the black and pink colour combination we all want more of!
2009 - Mercurial Superfly
The infamous story of the Mercurial Superfly in its launch colorway dates back to 2009, when this upgraded “elite” version of the Vapor had to be recalled from retailers around the world weeks before launch. Why? While players were wearing these boots with the new lightweight flywire technology before the initial launch, some pairs had ripped apart on live broadcast.
Both Didier Drogba and Andrey Arshavin were seen to have massive blows to the upper of the boot. However, Nike managed to turn things around very quickly by making the flywire material package tougher and managing to get the boots into retail stores by the next colourway release.
Although an embarrassing moment for Nike, credit should be given to their creation team for pushing the boundaries on lightweight boots at the time.
2014 - Mercurial Superfly IV
2014 saw another game changing moment for the football boot industry thanks to Nike. The Superfly IV featured a handful of new technologies and design updates. The key one being the Flyknit technology used on the upper, creating a whole new sensation and sock-like fit around the foot. This was also the first Dynamic Fit collar design on the Nike Mercurial line, a feature we still see to date on Superfly iterations.
2019 - Mercurial Dream Speed
Initially released in 2019 as a disruptive special edition, the signature line led by Cristiano Ronaldo aims to inspire the next generation of speedsters, including the likes of Leroy Sane, Jaden Sancho, Bruno Fernandes and our very own Sam Kerr.
This first edition of Nike Mercurial Dream Speed outlined technical details that could be found in a Mercurial schematic, such as perforation patterns, registration marks, crop lines, colour codes, a scale ruler, and other graphic elements that show how the boot was built.
2022 - Air Zoom Mercurial
The latest iteration from Mercurial was certainly one that didn’t disappoint. With the major tech updates being the three-quarter length Zoom Airbag sitting above the soleplate and the grippy Vaporposite+ upper. The Zoom Airbag traditionally found in Nike’s running shoes has been integrated into the Mercurial with the purpose of providing an extra layer of spring when moving fast on the pitch, and oh boy can you feel it.
2022 - Zoom Mercurial Ultra SE
What’s better than a three-quarter length Zoom Airbag? A full length one. It was not hard to place this at number one as the limited edition drop had the world buzzing from the moment it was pictured. A merge of Flywire and Zoom strobel unit, a defender's worst nightmare. From a visual standpoint, the designers at Nike took the Air Zoom branding elements to a whole new level, along with one of the fanciest color shifting outsole finishes you’ll ever see on a pair of boots.
No doubt the Nike Mercurials are one of the best boots, if not, the best in the world. The pioneers of speed boots within the industry, we are excited to see what the swoosh will present for us in the coming years.
