Inside Ultra: Meet Shylah Balla-Ateli - When National Duty Calls
In our new series Inside Ultra, we’re shining a spotlight on the incredible staff members who are making waves in the football world.
Today, we’re thrilled to start the series with Shylah Balla-Ateli, an 18-year-old footballer with a promising career ahead. With a rich heritage and a fierce passion for the game, Shylah is sharing with us her career yet only starting.
A Diverse Background
Shylah's journey begins with her unique heritage, blending Samoan, Albanian, Greek, and Indonesian roots. Growing up in a multicultural environment has shaped her identity and fueled her ambition. “I’ve been playing football for most of my life,” she says, inspired by her uncle who played at Caroline Springs George Cross.

Starting at Spring Hills in 2015 and later moving to George Cross in 2022, Shylah has continued to rise through the ranks, now playing for one of the biggest teams in Victoria, Heidelberg.
From Australia to Samoa
Shylah's selection for the Samoan Women’s National Team at just 18 was a massive achievement. “It felt like all the hard work I’ve put in over the years was finally paying off,” she shares.
This wasn’t just a personal victory; it was a proud moment for her family and a tribute to her culture. “Knowing I was playing for something bigger than myself motivated me every time I stepped on the pitch.”

A Dream Come True
One of the highlights of her journey was stepping onto the field for her first game during the FIFA Women’s World Cup OFC Qualifiers. “Standing beside the NZ Ferns players was an emotional moment,” she recalls. Singing the anthem while realising she was representing her country was a feeling she describes as unforgettable.
Lessons from the Pitch
Facing off against international teams like New Zealand taught Shylah invaluable lessons about the intensity and physicality of the game. “Winning 1v1s against amazing players like Indiah-Paige Riley felt like a dream”. These experiences have motivated her to focus on the finer details of the game, such as decision-making and consistency.
Football, Football & Football
As a player for Heidelberg United FC, the NPLW 2024 champions, Shylah is not just excelling on the pitch; she’s also managing university and her role at Ultra. “Time management and discipline are key” - staying organised helps her give 100% to training, studies, and work. “My goal of making football my professional career drives me”.

Unapologetically Football
As part of our team, Shylah embodies what it means to be unapologetically football. “It’s my mindset and dedication, football is a big part of who I am, and I take pride in representing myself, my team, and my culture every time I play.”
As Shylah continues her journey, we’re excited to see how her passion and hard work will unfold on and off the pitch.
