Robert Lewandowski #OwnTheMoment

Game over: Lewandowski - One of the deadliest numbers 9’s in world football...

After being the top scorer in the third and second tiers of Polish football with Znicz Pruszkow, he moved to top-flight Lech Poznan, and was the top scorer in the league as they won the 2009-10 Ekstraklasa. In 2010, he transferred to Borussia Dortmund for a reported €4.5 million, where he won honours including two consecutive Bundesliga titles and a season as the leagues top goal scorer. In 2013, he earned with Borussia a spot in the 2013 UEFA Champions League Final, a tournament in which he was the second top goalscorer, behind only Christiano Ronaldo.

This is where we begin our Lewandowski journey, as we take a look some career game over moments which prove what a venomous number 9 he is.

  • First Goal

Our first game over moment came against local rivals Schalke in the Revierderby. In just his third game for Dortmund, Lewy scored in the 86th minute to kill the game off and get his Bundesliga goal tally off the mark. It was the perfect start to the season for him, winning over the fans instantly by helping take down the local enemy.

  •  Title win in 2010/11

Although it was a quiet first season at Dortmund for Lewy in terms of goals, he played an integral part in the sides title winning season.

After taking time to get used to Jurgen Klopp’s demanding system, he finished the campaign with 8 goals in the Bundesliga. Klopp played Lewy in a range of positions in this first season, allowing him to develop a wide range of attributes, shaping himself up for a mega second season with a rounded skillset.

  •  First Bundesliga hattrick for Dortmund

Season 2011/12 for Lewandowski, his second season in the black and yellow, was the one where the world took notice of this exceptional talent. It didn’t take long for him to score his first hattrick for the club as the out and out main man up front. The 3 goals came at the expense of Augsburg in the league, and made onlookers recognize him as one of the most prolific strikers in Europe.

  •  Title in 2011/12

The goals didn’t dry up after the Augsburg game, as Lewandowski went on to score 24 goals in the Bundesliga. These goals helped make it back to back championships for Dortmund – an incredible feat given the financial prowess of Bayern Munich.

  • 2012/13 UCL Semi Final

On April 24, 2013, Lewandowski became the first ever player to score 4 goals in a UEFA Champions League Semi-Final, against Real Madrid. This effort was enough to get Dortmund into the Final, where they narrowly lost out to rivals Bayern Munch, the club he would go on to sign for at the start of the 2014/15 season.

Not many players can boast a record like this against Real, especially in a match of such importance.

  •  Those 9 minutes

On September 22, 2015, Lewandowski set a record that might never be beaten.

With Bayern trailing Vfl Wolsburg 1-0 at halftime, Pep Guardiola injected Lewy into the game to try and restore order for the home side in the second half. What happened next will always been known as the 9-minute miracle in Germany. Lewandowski put 5 past Diego Benaglio in 9 minutes… and these weren’t just tap ins either. This game over moment highlighted his devastating ability to the rest of the world, put him into the record books again.

Height, strength, balance, pace, intelligent movement and proficiency with both feet. Everything you need you to end your opponent’s game.
