What next for Manchester United?

There is no doubt Ole Gunnar Solskjaer put his heart and soul into the Manchester United job over the last few years, but unfortunately, that isn’t enough.

Ole was severely out of his depth and whilst he had his moments as head coach his sacking was more than deserved. He arrived with the club in 7th place, was fired with the club in 6th, didn’t win anything, and leaves behind a squad that is as disjointed and unbalanced as what he inherited.

The question is what and who next for Manchester United?

The decision-makers at the club seem to think that the laws of modern football don’t apply to them. They’re too big a club to be run like the others, and their manager has to ‘get it’. If Antonio Conte isn’t a ‘Manchester United manager’ who is?

United’s two best managers of all time are Sir Matt Busby, former Manchester City & Liverpool player and Sir Alex Ferguson who played in Scotland and managed Aberdeen before arriving in Manchester. Neither had ties to the club, neither ‘got’ the club and neither would be hired today.

Chelsea, Manchester City & Liverpool are all reaping the benefits of the worlds best managers. Klopp wasn’t a Liverpool legend, Pep never scored the winner for United and Tuchel retired in the German lower leagues at 24.

Neither of them ‘got it’ at their club, but all of them have won trophies, and will continue to win them whilst United will continue to make up the numbers until they sign a quality coach.

United have been linked with; Pochettino, Valverde, Favre but also Carrick, Rooney & and now Steve Bruce has put his hand up for the job.

Will United wake up and sign an accomplished manager with a history of success? Or will they opt for another underqualified favourite son and end up back here in a season or two?
